Quote by vatican92I've got a question.
I heard that it was illegal to say Merry Christmas in US.
Wazzup with that? Is that really democracy?

That's a good question, vatican92. It's not actually illegal to say "Merry Christmas" here in the US...it is, however, considered politically incorrect to say. It's classified as such because it isn't the only holiday that time of year (Christmas, Hanukah, New Years, etc.), and it's more affiliated to Christianity, even though the media and most everyone else has managed to turn it into another over-commercialized secular holiday. Therefore, it can be "offensive" to those who hold to a different faith, or don't believe in God at all.

For example, you know how during that season instead of hearing the usual "Have a nice day!" when you're in a store, you'll hear "Merry Christmas"? Well, now the cashiers and workers have been instricted to say a more ambiguous response, "Happy holidays." So it's not illegal, just politically incorrect, which a lot of Americans care about, I guess.

Now, I've never been one to care about political correctness, so it doesn't affect me much, though it is sad not to hear it as often. I still say "Merry Christmas," and I know the real meaning behind it. If I can, I'll get the person I'm talking with to say the same, but whatever.

Okay, that was a seriously long-winded answer...sorry, vatican; I hope it makes more sense now. Well, as much sense as it can make, I suppose...

I think it has more to do with some Americans being sue-happy. That is; there is a strong potential for a random individual in the US to sue any major corporation for religious discrimination, based solely on the fact they said "Merry Christmas" instead of a gender-neutral "Happy holidays". ...Sigh... Not that there was actually anything wrong with "Merry Christmas" to begin with.

...But no company is willing to risk the legal fees and potential settlement/unfavorable judgement just so their employees can say "Merry Christmas". ...One of the least appealing part of being in a literate, financially wealthy, free nation. :( ...Definitely beats being forced to believe any one particular religion though. ...And I do think the phrase "Merry Christmas" should be legally considered what it is. ...A friendly salutation.

...Nonsense lawsuits are a drag on the whole of the USA.

I'm still running Gentoo. I really, really like this distro. ...Compared to my nightmares with Slackware, this seems like I must be gliding. ...And it can be trimmed pretty close too. ...Not too much in the way of necessary crap. ...I'm pretty sure it will work without XWindows at all... ....But I'm not sure. ...I've been doing a test on my dedicated Gentoo box. ...Previously it seemed unstable. ...After I gave it a new powersupply (And a shiney matrix-lookin' case) it has run rock-hard for weeks. ...And using Portage... ...Upgrades and installs are a breeze too. If anyone wants to try it out, I'd encourage it.

...Just do a "emerge -u --deep world" and not a "emerge -u world", or you will inevitably screw something up. :D Oh, and you have to run "emerge sync" to get the most recent stuff available for install. ...Gentoo will also block out packages that have a security risk to help protect noobs. ...All around; I think this has been my best Linux experience ever.

Just checking in. Wow... ...Long time between posts here. :( I guess a really great Republican died today. ...known for keeping awesome books. The headline reads "Caspar Weinberger dead at 88". ...He was on both Carter's and Regan's cabinets. ...Sounds like a guy who worked pretty hard for the side of good in general. ...Appreciable by liberals and conservatives alike, or so I would imagine...

...Dunno... Their prices looked a little high to me for some
reason...

$839 is high for a x700,
wxga, and a 64bit Turion compatible system? Wow you want allot? Have
you shopped around?

Isn't that the price without an actual CPU?

Just saying hello. I hope everything is good with y'all.

Welcome. :)

Quote by animefreak3I tried Gentoo once, but wow that's allot of work. If you install, and
test as often as we do, it'd be a nightmare. We even complain about
installing SuSE too often. This machine here I've redone once from
scratch since it went production. (I hate reiser)

...Alot of work initially, but still far better/simple than Slackware. ...Maintenance is much simpler though.

I agree though... ...It definitely could be easier...

Quote by animefreak3I would like the make an animted gif for my avatara. I have photoshop,
illustrator, flash for mac, and GIMP for GNU/Linux. Can someone explain
for me how they make them using these tools?

I think if you want a gif, you'll need to download LZW libraries or somesuch, since the gif format is patented or something to that effect... ...Just fyi....

Quote by SilentMasamuneNeedless to say, I've seeked some relief at another forum. Everything
is proceeding very smoothly because rules were plotted out beforehand
and administration is supreme. I'll come to MT from time to time, but I
will be at the forum I've noted out. Look at my signature...

Whatever Mel. I do hope you have fun here or wherever you go.

Quote by shinsengumiDear members of Chaos Cross, As many of you may know, this year I'll be
starting my graduate work in public administration and will be working
on getting nominated and accepted as a Presidential Management Fellow.
The PMF program is administered by the Office of Personnel Management
and is essentially one that puts graduate students at the top of their
classes on an accelerated track in administration in the federal
government. What this means for Minitokyo is that I will most certainly
not have the time to comb through the forums like I used to in the
past. I believe that positions of authority are positions of
responsibility, and I feel that when one is no longer willing or able
to fulfil his responsibilities that he should step down and let others
step up and take on the responsibility. As such, as of today, I am
going to step down from the position of Forum Moderator.
Thank you all for your support in the past, and I hope that we will be
able to continue to help the moderators improve Minitokyo and make it
the best community it can be.
Sincerely,
shinsengumi

AWESOME. I hope it goes favoribly for you. Keep in touch, eh?

And regarding the hacker allegations, the threat http://forum.minitokyo.net/showthread/31825/ didn't help...

Hey, I just figured I'd stop by and see how things are going. I hope things are well with the AC, and everybody's doing good.

Take care!

Linux users should go to adobe.com and do a search for "Linux". That should send the proper message.

Quote by FabianA(...) is up and
running again. The solution was
pretty apparent I
just had to do a CD-install and upgrade my system afterwards.
If there is only one person to overlook apparent solutions then it's
me. ^__^

It's not that unusual that that is necessary on big version-upgrades.
It's also one of the reasons I love Gentoo...no such thing as a
"version" of the whole system.

mmmm Sooo so. 2004.3, 2005.0 ...But those are just snapshots. ...Gentoo
is very dynamic...

Just finished my first (successful) installation. (I tend to forget
something important do typos. ^^'') A stage-1-installation sure takes a
lot of time*, especially if xorg refueses to do what I want it to do.
So far I've been able to solve all of my installation trouble thanks to
the documentation, my old Sphinx-OS-Live-CD and google. :)
a few months ago I've read a wiki about protecting config-files from
being replaced/updated. I'm still searching for that wiki because I
don't want to etc-update my system to death.
*I'm glad that there hasn't been a electrical power outage during the
last 3 days or else I would have to pay a few hospital bills (including
mine).:D
